Understanding Your Child

Kids bring magic, energy, laughter, curiosity, and that’s exactly what makes your family photos beautiful. But a little preparation helps them feel safe, comfortable, and excited for the experience.

The first step is choosing the right moment. Every child has their rhythm: naps, snacks, bursts of energy. When they’re rested and fed, they naturally open up. I always ask parents what time of day their child is happiest, and if we’re shooting by the ocean, we plan around soft morning or late-afternoon light and fewer crowds.

Before I start shooting, I like to let kids explore the location, touch the sand, feel the water, run around a bit. It gives shy kids space to warm up and outgoing kids a fun way to burn off excitement. I introduce myself at their level, sit or kneel, and ask a few simple questions about their favorite toys, pets, or games. The goal is simple: show them I’m not “a stranger with a camera,” but someone here to have fun with them.

Let Them Play, Not Pose

The most natural photos happen when kids are allowed to be… kids.
Running, exploring, splashing in the water, collecting shells, these tiny, joyful moments tell a much bigger story than any stiff “smile for the camera.”

During sessions, I always follow the child’s pace. If they’re bursting with energy, we move with it - chase waves, jump, spin, dance. If they’re quieter, we slow down, walk the shoreline, pick flowers, cuddle with Mom or Dad. When a child starts getting tired or restless, we switch activities or take a moment to reset.

Parents often hope for at least one classic photo where everyone looks at the camera, and we usually get it naturally, without forcing anything.
But the real treasures are the candid moments: the giggles, the sprint toward the water, the way they hold your hand or look up at you with complete trust.

Creating Comfort at Every Age

Each stage of childhood brings its own personality and I adjust the session to match it.

Newborns (up to ~20 days)
Sleepy, cozy, peaceful. These sessions are slow, gentle, and focused on closeness.

1–7 months
This is the “in your arms” stage. Babies need support, and photos feel tender, intimate, and incredibly sweet.

1–3 years
The explorers! They run, climb, chase waves, rarely stay still and that’s perfect. This is when the most joyful, expressive images happen.

4–6 years and older
Kids begin to understand the idea of a photo session, but still thrive when things feel fun and relaxed. A mix of gentle direction and play works beautifully.

No matter the age, I encourage bringing a few things that help your little one feel secure and happy: a favorite toy, a small snack, water, or even a tiny “surprise toy” to keep spirits high. Soft, comfortable clothes make a huge difference too, especially near the ocean.

In the end, the best photos come when children feel free to be themselves, curious, playful, perhaps a little mischievous. With patience, movement, and a relaxed approach, every session turns into a mini-adventure they’ll enjoy just as much as you do.

Final Thoughts

My goal is always the same: help your child feel safe, joyful, and deeply connected to you. When the pressure disappears, their real personality shines and that’s what creates photographs you’ll cherish for years.

If you have any questions about preparing your child, choosing outfits, or picking the perfect location, just send me a message or you can read my Guide here.

I’m always happy to help you plan a session that feels natural, relaxed, and beautifully “you.”
